The painting that was purchased for the Estonian History Museum collection in 1978 was in a really bad condition – the canvas was torn, the paint layer loose, over-paintings numerous and the surface dirty. The biggest challenge for conservators was getting rid of the robust repairs made in the course of former restorations. The surface was carefully cleaned and fixed, the canvas was doubled with sturgeon glue. The painting was stretched anew on the base frame, primed and toned.
