The hydrogels as Agarose, Kelcogel and Phytogel were tested for paper cleaning process. The prepared hydrogels transparent films were used for historical document cleaning. To evaluate the effectiveness of the used materials and procedures, the treated paper samples were characterized by different techniques and measurements, as pH and water sorption, colour changes, FTIR and SEM. pH values after cleaning with hydrogels were increased in all cases, but the biggest with Kelcogel. SEM images confirm, that after hydrogel treatment, paper seem cleaner and no swelling or fraying are present.
